About Us

The Jefferson Tibetan Society’s primary function is to provide teaching and meditation practice in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, as exemplified by His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teachings.   Our resident Lama of 25 years, Ven. Geshe Jampel Thardo from Drepung Loseling Monastery passed from our world in September 2008. He demonstrated physical signs of a very high level of spiritual realization (sitting in the state of Tuk-dam) at the time of his passing and we are so grateful for all the guidance he provided to our sangha and the central Virginia community.   As it was Geshe-la’s wish for our Dharma center to continue to function as a teaching & practice center, the Saturday Buddhist Study Series was continued for many years, as well as other activities and events.

Please see our Special Events page for the Dharma activities that we continue to sponsor and support.

The Jefferson Tibetan Society was founded in 1982 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational foundation.   Donations are tax-deductible.
