The Jefferson Tibetan Society's primary function is
to provide teaching and meditation practice in the Tibetan Buddhist
tradition, as exemplified by His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teachings.
Our resident Lama of 25 years, Venerable
Geshe
Jampel Thardo from Drepung Loseling Monastery passed from our world in
September 2008. He demonstrated physical signs of a very high level of
spiritual realization at the time of his passing and we are so grateful
for all the guidance he provided to our sangha and the central Virginia
community. As it was Geshe-la's wish for our Dharma center to
continue to function as a teaching & practice center, the following
activities are offered:
We are happy to welcome Venerable Tenzin Gephel
from Namgyal Monastery Institute as our visiting Teacher in
Residence for the next year!! He taught a wide variety of
Buddhist classes at Namgyal Institute since 1997 and served as
the first Buddhist chaplain at Cornell University for the past 10
years.
WEDNESDAY EVENING CLASSES! In addition to
offering the Sat. study/practice session, we have a Wednesday evening
class. Join us every Wednesday in May, 9th 16th 23rd and 30th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. We will be starting "The Six Perfections". The six pefections, or paramitas, are the six virtues: generosity, ethics, patience, enthusiastic
perseverance, concentration and wisdom. Reading, understanding and practicing
them purify karma, think and live unobstructively and reach the goal of
enlightenment. Suggested donation: $10/session.
Saturday
Buddhist Study/Practice Group Series: Each Sat. session includes a 15 minute shamatha meditation practice,
Buddhist prayers, study, commentary from Ven. Gephel with time for
discussion and questions & answers. The focus is on His
Holiness Dalai Lama's book, How to
See Yourself As You Really Are, a beautiful book
translated by Jeffrey Hopkins which covers the key concepts of how
compassion, love and insight work cooperatively with each other to
progress on the path. The Sat. session is appropriate for
participants at all levels. Our next meetings will continue Saturdays in April: 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th
